The LUX team is your guide to creating a zero-waste event. There are so many simple ways to produce a green event – such as sustainable rentals and linen options, coordination of mass transit, offering guests public transportation, menus featuring local ingredients – which helps to boost community revenue and reduce our carbon footprint, paperless proposals and invitations, eco-friendly centerpiece options, and SO much more.
Another way we create a zero-waste event is by providing a range of eco-friendly tableware options. When events require disposable flatware we offer only biodegradable options made from natural fibers that will completely decompose or can be composted, we do not offer plastic options. Additionally, we offer an array of beautiful and sustainable china options, this is the preferred tableware method for sustainable events because this product is reusable.
Along with our sustainable event production options, LUX works closely with our clients to narrow in on guest counts to make sure that food waste is limited as much as possible. Rather than see our excess food turn to waste, we want to provide meals for Utah’s homeless and others in need of a helping hand. This outreach includes over a dozen partnerships with non-profit and cultural organizations. Every other day a member of a local rescue operation comes to our facility to take our leftover food from events to those in need.
LUX Recycling Program
LUX is not only committed to our clients, but our environment. Over the last 5 years we have created an award-winning and comprehensive recycling program, which diverts nearly 90% of our waste from the landfill and is driven to multiple recycling streams.
On average, we produce over 150+ pounds of food waste per day, summing up to 27 tons every year! Rather than contributing to a landfill, these scraps and leftovers are recycled into fertilizers for city parks and local farms through our partnership with Momentum Recycling. A variety of items enter our kitchen on a daily basis, but only four end up at the landfill: plastic wrap, gloves, tape, and solid items that accompany food, such as aluminum foil. We are even working on remedying that – we were the first organization to sign up to support the Waste to Energy Recycling Facility, which will allow the products that previously were unable to be recycled to become energy to support our local community. Our first contribution to this facility took place in February 2019!
To encourage other businesses and individuals to adopt a comprehensive recycling program or sustainable business program we regularly join panels and workshops and speak at local universities and conferences. We share how we implemented our eco-focused business model, as well as give tips and information for other businesses to follow suit, we are working toward a cleaner and healthier world for future generations.
Additionally, LUX has created a Sustainability Committee, which meets monthly to review all aspects of the LUX and ensure we are meeting or exceeding our standards of excellence. We are constantly refining our processes, creating innovative processes, and educating our teams on how to further drive our sustainable mission.
Our facility is a huge part of our sustainability, we’ve completely updated our current facility to be energy efficient by replacing light bulbs, windows, and equipment with energy-saving options. Our walk-in fridges are designed to use as little energy as possible by having the walk-in freezer located inside the fridge. By putting it at the back of the walk-in fridge it gives the freezer less of a shock and doesn’t need to adjust its temperature as frequently. Additionally, we purchase wind power through the Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program, meaning all the energy we use is wind energy.
As we move forward into the future – LUX is in the process of building a new state of the art facility which will also meet all LEED standards.
LUX is committed to a stronger, cleaner community!
